His Dark Materials, the BBC/HBO series

General overview

In 2015, BBC One commissioned the production company BadWolf for a TV adaptation of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials. The Cardiff-based company teamed for this project with HBO (who owns international rights outside of the UK) but also with Scholastic and New Line Cinema, who were both already involved in Chris Weitz's movie The Golden Compass in 2007, another adaptation of Philip Pullman's Northern Lights. The author is executive producer of the show.

Jack Thorne, co-writer of the stageplay Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, is in charge of the script for the whole show since April 2016. He stated that he wrote 46 drafts for the first episode. He teamed with other scriptwriters for seasons 2 and 3. If the adaptation was initially described as a five-series show, the project finally took form as one season per adapted book.

The first season, consisiting in 8 episodes, aired worldwide late 2019, on BBC One in the UK where a strong 7.2m viewers were estimated for the premiere, and on HBO in the USA (where the show was rated TV-14, i.e. for audiences above 14) and many other countries. See below for extended listing.

The second series consisted in seven episodes and adapted the whole of The Subtle Knife. It aired late 2020.

The third and final series, including 8 episodes, is likely to broadcast around Fall of 2022.

Filming

The filming of first season spanned over the second semester of 2018 at Cardiff's Wolf Studios and in various locations such as Oxford, Bristol, Cardiff and different places in Wales, including Mynydd Llangynidr for the Trollesund exterior scenes. Additionnal scenes were shot late June 2019, shortly before series 2 starts filming.

The second season's production ranged from July to late November 2019. The production took place at Wolf Studios Wales in Cardiff on the 5 sets of the Bad Wolf's facilities that Cittàgazze had the immense happiness to visit observing beauty beyond words and fully dedicated people working here to bring these books to life. Some on-location shots were also filmed over all over Wakes, notably in Cardiff, Oxford or next to Port Talbot. A standalone episode revolving around Lord Asriel, created from scratch and not based on the book, should have also been filmed but had to be canceled due to the coronavirus lockdown.

The third season was greenlit late 2020 with filming spanning from May 24 to late November 2021 at Wolf Studios in Cardiff and also in Spain. It will air from December 2022.
