His Dark Materials, the BBC series

In 2015, BBC One commissioned the production company BadWolf for a TV adaptation of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials. The Cardiff-based company teams for this project with HBO (who owns international rights outside of the UK) but also with Scholastic and New Line Cinema, who were both already involved in Chris Weitz's movie The Golden Compass in 2007, another adaptation of Philip Pullman's Northern Lights. The author will be executive producer of the show.

The adaptation was initially described as a five-series show of eight 1-hour episodes each. The first series was described as fully covering Northern Lights) and is likely to be aired at the end of 2019 on BBC One in the United-Kingdom and HBO in the United States of America.

Jack Thorne, co-writer of the stageplay Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, is in charge of the script of the whole series. The first episode is expected to be titled "Roger".

The filming of Series 1 is now over ; it spanned over the second semester of 2018 at Cardiff's Wolf Studios and in various locations such as Oxford and different places in Wales, including Mynydd Llangynidr for the Trollesund exterior scenes.
The second series, already confirmed, is now in pre-production with filming expected to start later this year.

Dafne Keen (Lyra), Lin-Manuel Miranda (Lee), James McAvoy (Asriel) and Ruth Wilson (Mrs. Coulter) will play in the series (see full cast below). Tom Hooper (A King's Speech) will direct the first two episodes, followed by Dawn Shadforth, Otto Bathurst, Euros Lyn and Jamie Childs for the next six episodes of Series 1.

The first sneak peek was released in February 2019 and the first trailer in May 2019. A few other glimpses of the show regularly appear online for a while.
The official Twitter account of the show regularly shares pics related to the show, though.
