On the set of His Dark Materials S2
Last year in October, your servant had the priviledge to visit the set of the second season of His Dark Materials at Wolf Studios Wales, in Cardiff, a few weeks
ahead of the broadcast of season one.

Walking through Cittàgazze's mesmerizing streets and its many shops has been a fabulous experience, especially when having Joel Collins nearby to unveil the details of his beautiful Creation.
It also was a sort-of religious discovery of the Cave and a meeting with various anatomical parts of a bear, with a whole collection of dæmons and the opportunity to exchange a few words
with some of the artists giving life to these. But the Magisterium was also very busy that day, and it involved a mourning lady. And a monkey, too - a golden monkey was involved.

It is honestly quite hard to put words on such an experience, but as the Magisterium has allowed these secrets to be shared, here you can find what it was like to visit a spectreless
Cittàgazze and visit many worlds beyond the Aurora...

 ComicCon: announcements and a trailer!
On July 23 took place the panel dedicated to His Dark Materials S2 in the frame of the virtual edition of the ComicCon 2020. As expected, the event brought many news and details worth being reported. The panel included script-writer Jack Thorne, executive producer Jane Tranter as well as actors and actresses Dafne Keen (Lyra), Amir Wilson (Will), Ruth Wilson (Marisa Coulter), Lin-Manuel Miranda (Lee), Andrew Scott (John Parry) and Ariyon Bakare (Lord Boreal).

As expected, we could watch the first trailer for S2 which included some insights of Cittàgazze (sigh and awe), of Mary's Cave and many news characters.

The event was indeed the perfect time for casting announcements: the production revealed that Simone Kirby would be Mary Malone, Jade Anouka would be Ruta Skadi, Terence Stamp (who voiced Lord Asriel back in 2003 for the first ever adaptation of the books on radio) will be Giacomo Paradisi while Fleebag actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge will voice Sayan Kotor, the daemon of John Parry (Andrews Scott, also from Fleebag. Ella Schrey-Yeats and Bella Ramsey were since the event confirmed as Paola and Angelica (yes, little bro is now little sis).

Another bit of news: it was confirmed by executive producer Jane Tranter that a Asriel-centred episode of the series had been scrapped due to lockdown. The episode was a standalone, not based on existing material but developped by Jack Thorne with approval from Philip Pullman. The rest of the series (7 episodes to be aired before the end of year) were already wrapped but that special won't come in the end, or will have to be filmed at a later, undefined point. ...

All these news are included to our special seriespage !

BBC series: S2 in 2020 and other news
Last Sunday a rewatch of S1E1 of His Dark Materials took place on Twitter, involving some part of the creative team: executive producer Jane Tranter, scriptwriter Jack Thorne, composer Lorne Balfe, VFX supervisor Russell Dodgson and Dafne Keen, aka Lyra.

As the official Twitter account of the show shared various documents related to the creation of S1, the team also answered various questions from Tiwtter users.

We were thus confirmed that S2, currently in post-production, will air before the end of the year and that the team is about to start on the scripts of the not-yet-greenlighted S3. We could also learn many details on adaptation choices, soundtrack creation or VFX.

We prepared a summary of all that was said and of all shared documents from the event. You simply have to click here.

BBC Series: it seems S3 sounds good for HBO
If His Dark Materials S2, which will adapt The Subtle Knife has already wrapped and is currently undergoing post-production, the opportunity of a third series is of course being discussed.

The first two series were produced by the BBC in the UK and HBO in the USA so the decision might come from both sides of Atlantic Ocean. If ratings were good in the UK (over 7M viewers over 28d including replay), we were missing US figures...

A recent article by Deadline allow to be optimistic. The website indeed discussed with HBO President of Programming Casey Bloys, who shared that the show had gathered over 5M views per episode, reaching the expectations of the show: “We don’t have many shows where kids and parents can watch together and that was the idea with this show and it has done really well.

As for the next steps, Bloys seems confident: “Season two is just coming in and I think once we get season two, we’ll talk about season three and what it would look like. We obviously have to talk to the BBC”.

Deadline also reminds that executive producer and Bad Wolf co-founder Jane Tranter previously shared with the media that she hoped to split the book into two seasons. At the San Diego Comic Con last July, she also had mentionned that a sole hypotetical S3 could in the end require more than eight episodes...

 BBC series: Wrap on S2
Various clues found online on Instagram tend to indicate that filming of S2 for His Dark Materials (adapting the second book of Philip Pullman's trilogy, The Subtle Knife) wrapped over the week-end, concurring with the schedule mentionned in previous press reports of the past months.

Filming started back in late June with a few outdoor sessions in Oxford and Wales but most of the production taking place at Wolf Studios, Cardiff.

The thirs season was not greenlighted yet. Still being penned, its confirmation might depend on the reception and ratings of series 1, being currently broadcast...
