Released in 2017, this first installment of The Book of Dust trilogy, set 10 years before His Dark Materials, sees the young Malcolm Polstead working with Alice at his parents's inn, The Trout. When a flood overwhelms Oxford, both children are suddenly in charge of a 6-month-old baby, Lyra. Abroad a canoe named La Belle Sauvage, Malcolm and Alice evacuate and protect the infant while facing many opponents, including some agents of the Consistorial Court of Disciple and a terrifying man with a hyena-dæmon, Gérard Bonneville.

This second installment in The Book of Dust was released in 2019. It takes us 20 years after La Belle Sauvage: Lyra is now a student in a very trouble world and has to take the first important choices of her adult life, while Malcolm Polstead is a professor with numerous responsibilites. When Pantalaimon happens to be the sole witness of a crime, Lyra is suddenly taken into a swirl of event which will put her even more at odds with her own dæmon and bring along tremendous revelations. Soon, her existence will have to take a new path...

Philip Pullman is currently writing this third and final book of this new trilogy and stated that it would bring its protagonists further East. The author also shared in 2018 that the title of the book will be somehow related to roses: possibly The Garden of Roses or Roses from the South...
As of May 2021, the manuscript counted 128 pages. Early 2023, the author stated that he had written more than half of the book (19 chapters, 345 pages) and that, with a bit of luck, it would be completed by the end of 2023... To be concluded...
